Certificate in Emergency Management and Homeland Security

Emergency management and homeland security is a growing field in the United States and around the world. This certificate gives students in just about any program of study a way to stand out from the crowd and learn real world approaches to solving complicated problems.

The certificate program includes courses on:

Emergency management, both domestic and international
EM policy development and planning
Homeland security policy
Terrorism, including international policy analysis
Public health
Public information
Technology and disaster management

Students complete a variety of classroom and real-world experiences and develop critical skills for working in the field of emergency management.

The certificate is offered at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management & Homeland Security

15 Credit Hours

This program includes skills and knowledge appropriate for practicing managers and all those interested in emergency management training. Students who have completed their undergraduate certificate from this program should contact our office before registering for classes as a graduate student. Successful completion of the courses applied to the EMHS Certificate is defined as a grade of C or higher. Students who receive grades lower than a C in any courses must repeat that course if they wish to have it apply to the EMHS certificate.

EMHS Certificate with Honors

Certificate in the Application of Unmanned Aircraft Systems

State and local emergency managers have shown intense interest in what drones can do for the field of emergency management, particularly emergency response, recovery and mitigation. Trade associations estimate 15,000 new drones will be put into service by state and local agencies in the next 15 years. However, experts in the field are rare, and few are cross trained in management of these systems and the fields in which they are applied.

The Emergency Management and Homeland Security Program has developed extensive UAS capability and expertise. This includes practical ‘hands on’ usage of the technology as well as the regulatory frameworks, requirements, and realities of using this data in a variety of fields. EMHS has used drones in several disaster risk reduction projects in the Caribbean and is currently collaborating with the Florida Division of Emergency Management on integrating drones into emergency management and public safety. Three faculty members from EMHS have acquired manufacturer certifications for specific aircraft and the program has received a Certificate of Authorization (COA) from the Federal Aviation Administration to fly UAS for research and educational purposes.

Beginning in the Summer of 2016, EMHS is offering a new certificate program titled, "Application of Unmanned Aircraft Systems". This certificate program gives students another way to differentiate themselves from their peers as well as provides unique and desirable educational and practical experiences.

The certificate program is available at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and is open to all majors. Students may take the UAS courses without being enrolled in the certificate program.

Graduate Certificate in the Application of Unmanned Aircraft Systems

15 Credit Hours

The graduate certificate in the Application of UAS requires 15 credit hours selected from the list below. The three core courses are required, while the remaining credit hours may come from anywhere on the list. Successful completion of the courses applied to the Application of UAS certificate is defined as a grade of C or higher. Students who receive grades lower than a C in any courses must repeat that course if they wish to have it apply to the Application of UAS certificate.

Certificate Learning Outcomes

Successful students will be able to describe and discuss the operational components of an unmanned aircraft system.
Successful students will demonstrate the planning process for the operational use of a UAS.
Successful students will be able to utilize and implement the integration of UAS operations into existing public safety programs and systems.
Successful students will describe the policy implications of UAS integrations and use, including privacy issues, cost issues, and liability issues.
