We are pleased to announce an exciting new initiative by the Governor’s Hurricane Conference that provides funding for students to attend the 24th Annual Governor’s Hurricane Conference (GHC) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, May 23 – 28, 2010. For more information on the 2010 GHC, visit our Website at www.flghc.org.
All students currently enrolled in a public or private institution of higher education, at the graduate or undergraduate level, and who have taken or are taking emergency management related courses as part of their academic program, are eligible to apply for a scholarship to attend the 2010 GHC. While a student’s major or minor concentration of study need not be “emergency management” specifically, they should demonstrate that their field of study has a direct impact to overall emergency preparedness, response, recovery and/or mitigation. Students who are Florida “residents for tuition purposes” (as defined per sec. 1009.21, F.S.) will be given priority, although out-of-state or online students may be considered based upon review committee recommendation. The total number of students from any single institution will be limited based upon total funding availability.
University and college students living within commuting distance (50 miles or less from the conference facility) may apply for a registration fee waiver, parking and meals associated with the conference. University and college students living beyond commuting distance may apply for a registration fee waiver, hotel accommodations and meals included in the conference registration fee. Travel costs (air or ground transportation) to and from the conference is not included, nor are any meals that are not included in the conference registration fee. All recipients must commit to volunteer 12 hours as room monitor for the conference or other duties as needed. The GHC will make an effort to accommodate students’ sessions of preference to monitor.
We invite all interested students to apply online prior to the deadline of February 12, 2010. Applicants will be notified of the status of their applications in early March.
